The trick to getting a good application is to make sure you shampoo your hair before application so it’s damp and why residue/build up is gone, which can make the color not adhere to your hair. Remember, semi-permanent coats the surface of your hair, not the cuticle, so you want it as clean as possible. I really liked how this turned out on my hair. My hair is already pretty dark but my roots grow in pretty fast so this was absolutely needed. It does not have a super strong chemical smell, and left my hair feeling soft: I have problems using color that often damages my curl pattern. This did not! This is my hair immediately after wash. For reference my hair is a medium to light brown with an ash undertone and some gray hairs. Midnight blue is really nice with an undertone of a blue tint but no actual blue to your hair. Jet black is very dark, sharp and glossy looking. Natural black still solid coverage but a softer tone to it. Chestnut brown has a golden almost auburn color to it. Red hot rhythms is stunning when first applied but quickly loses color in less than a week making your hair look very much like a box dye job. Golden blond is true golden warm tone but again you need a professional to lighten your hair first in order for the color to take all the way through your hair. I don't know who has their nose broken, but the conditioner smells absolutely fabulous. Reminds of a salon honestly. obviously when you're dying you need to have a fan going but even that's not a bad smell. Bottom line as with any color going darker than your hair tone is always easy and possible. And going lighter impossible without a bleach or toner to lighten it first before depositing color. I really liked this brand, it was new to me and this is how I feel about it. Now that I’ve went through the process of dying my hair and the color has now been in for a full day. First the packaging was very neat and you knew what you were working with. Once opened everything was in the box with easy to read instructions. I was super excited to see the dye bottle was a twist off top. Usually I have to cut the tip of the dye bottle in the boxes dye that I normally use. The dye mixed after a few hard shakes, but once I poured into my hair I could see that it didn’t mix all the way so had to give a bit more hard shakes to get it to fully mix. The liquid itself was runny, I like my hair dye a bit less runny. The smell of it was not too powering, and once on the head and scalp it did burn a bit while I sat to catch my hair. The washout was nice and not messy. A few rinses and it came out clear. The product came with a very nice sized conditioner, that has left my hair super soft. The conditioner had a very nice smell. It reminded me of tropical fruit. My hair still smells like it, and I work all day. All my hair caught the color and came out great. I would recommend trying this brand if you have it within reach. Love this product. My hair is badly damaged due to beach, long time use of hair colours and sunshine. This Makes my hair shiny and soft. It does tint your hair to this shade. But that's all the good it does. It made my hair very frizzy and brittle and unmanageable. It was very hard to brush my hair after washing it out. Soooo very dry. So very puffy. My hair was in good condition before this too. The color lasted only a week with 2 washes. It doesn't stick for me. I have normal density, fine strain hair. When it does wash out, it has a green hue to it. I would stay far away from this product. There's other a lot more moisturizing and healthy products to deposit color into your hair. I really liked this kit, I've done two so far, my hair is a light brown/very dark blonde to start. I started with the H65 caramel , and the second time did the H85 champagne. Both gave good results. It does take a long time to pull the hair through the cap, especially if you do every hole, and it really helps to have someone to do the back for you. My husband did my whole head and it took us about 2 hours , and he did it pretty quick. I really like that you know you're getting 35v developer, and not just something random. Also like the leave in toner, seemed to really help take out any hint of brass. I know its not as perfect as getting it done at the salon, but I think its as close as can be, for 10 dollars you really can't beat it.Vicki

This highlighting kit is great for "virgin" hair, but if you already have highlights, I would not recommend it. I had significantly grown out roots, and didn't want to pay the price at a salon, so I attempted to do my own using this kit. The highlights ended up brassy and orange towards my roots, and certain parts of my hair turned yellow. The cap didn't allow my hair to be pulled through enough to get close to the root, and it doesn't allow you to put many near the root line, so I ended up with streaky, chunky blocks of hair–not highlights, at all. You will also definitely need someone to help you pull the hair through when you get to the back of your head. It's darn near impossible to see where to pull the hair through on your own, and I even made sharpie marks on the holes, like someone suggested a few comments back. The plastic tool that it comes with bent after maybe 10 holes, so that was a waste. Toner is supposed to help with yellow and orange brassy hair, and the toner did nothing for my hair. It's awful how expensive highlights are in a salon, but do yourself a favor and take the $11 that this costs and save it towards going to a salon. That's where I ended up anyway, so I wish I had this advice before I shelled out more money.kima124

I have used Loreals Frost design highlighting kits for quite a few years now. Its most definitely my go-to at home kit. I will say that when you choose to highlight/bleach your hair at home with a pull through cap, its a long LONG process especially if you have long hair like I do. Depending on how much of your hair you want lightend, and if you want some in the back/bottom you may need help from a friend (or in my case my fiance is actually always eager to help me, he's gotten used to it is really good at it!) Almost every time I use this kit I always end up having to leave the dye in my hair a bit longer than it suggests in the instructions. Normally if it takes too long I will get out the hair dryer blow hot air on my hair to help speed up the process. One thing that took me a long time to figure out was when I washed the dye out of my hair with the cap still on, it would hurt SO bad to take the cap off because bleach damages your hair and its wet knotted up. So, I take the conditioner included in the kit and let it sit on the highlighted hair as directed, wash out the cap glides right off, pain free! I really like that this kit comes with a toner as well in case your hair ends up too brassy/orange. I have never purchased a drugstore highlighting kit before that includes a toner. I always end up with nice cool colored highlights, and people always ask where I had my highlights done I tell them at home!!! Obviously when it comes to highlighting dyeing your own hair at home you risk it turning out a totally different color then what you wanted. This year alone I had red, turquoise, green, purple and some attempts to blonde hair at home. It was extremely damaging to my hair and I could not tone it for dear life. Revlon saved the day! I really want to find their mushroom blonde, I am dying to try it but I used the soft black for my root shadow, it helped with the orange and looked soft and natural. Before caving in to trying the $3.50 hair color I used Ion from Sallys, loreal and garnier olia (which is also good but fades super fast) Also I dampened my roots for a softer root shadow. I have used colour 2N which is the “Kardashian” dark brown shade according to my hair dresser. Perfect description for this shade! Super dark brown but not quite black. Even when I am pale I can pull off this colour (black would wash me out too much). The coverage is great, I have some grey hair now and it covers perfectly and lasts many weeks without fading much, however I have been using this colour once every couple months for about two years. I can't find my exact color, I like Wella colors for several reasons. The new line of purple, fuscia and Orchid, are really bright and are almost exact to the swatch. The color seems to last about a month before I need a touch up. My main problem is ease of finding this in local beauty supply stores. It has been a long time since I had done a cap highlight on myself but I was open to switching up my hair color and trying out Revlon’s Color Effects Frost Glow. I used the smaller hook end of the tool because I wanted a subtle highlight. It took a few tries before I got the method down for pulling the hair through the cap. I think it is really important to keep the tool flat to your head with the hook pointed up, to get the best results without pulling at your hair. Because I didn’t want a dramatic change, I planned to only pulled hair through the circled holes and only in the front and crown portions of the cap. I found it much too difficult to pull hair from any farther back on my head, so there was no chance I was going to be able to accomplish an all-over highlight, even if I wanted to. I would recommend having someone help you pull hair through the cap if you are going for a full head of highlights and definitely if you are new to cap highlights. The mixing and coloring process was super easy. The mixture did not smell harsh which was definitely appreciated. I would prefer a better fitting pair of gloves to wear. As you apply the mixture and make sure each strand is saturated, the gloves start to slide off and get in the way. I intended to check my hair after 10 minutes but my timer never went off, so it was 15 minutes before I checked. When I checked it, I panicked because it looked very blonde and brassy compared to my chocolate cherry brown hair color. After rinsing it off and shampooing and conditioning with the included toning shampoo and conditioner, I felt a little bit better about the color. It still looked very light (mostly in front) when I started to dry my hair with my Revlon One-Step Hair Dryer and Volumizer. After styling, other than looking a little more 2000’s chunky highlight at the front of my face than I would have liked, I am very happy with the look! I was actually pleasantly surprised that the color chart on the box was accurate! It would be nice to get a bigger packet of the toning conditioner and shampoo. I have shoulder-length fine hair and used the whole packet. Even putting two of each packet would be beneficial especially to those with long or thick hair. I could possibly see myself using this kit in the future, though I would probably force my husband to help pull hair through the cap. From hook to styling, the whole process took me about 3 1/2 hours. It gets a little chaotic trying to hold a mirror and angle yourself just right to reach all of the holes on the cap. Do you ever get tired of dropping $250+ at the salon for highlights? Especially when your hair grows super fast like mine and you have to go often? I’ll be honest, at 13, I had a very bad experience with box dye (haven’t we all?) and swore off it ever since. Well, with very limited skills and a bit more confidence, I gave this box a try. I figured, “it’s summer. If it goes bad there is always the sun.” To my surprise, It didn’t go bad at all, not even close! I actually have some bomb, salon style highlights! I love that this kit comes with a cap and hook. It took a few tries, but once I got the hang of hooking and pulling the hair through I actually found it quite fun and relaxing. The cap goes on nice and tight and will muffle your hearing while it’s on, so I totally suggest doing this when everyone is in bed and you don’t need to really hear anything for a while. The cap is magical because it really does an amazing job at protecting the rest of your hair. There is literally no way to end up with bleach drips or leopard spots on any other part of your hair. I have a naturally medium brown that leans auburn in the sunlight, but I like to intensify the red. Before COVID, I would get my hair lightened and colored in the salon, because every at-home dye kit consult I had told me you can't really lighten hair with kits, just add color. Darn. Wanting to DIY and needing easy, I've been using Overtone and have been thrilled with the results, but now that it's been so long since the salon, my salon-lightened ends have grown out and the red looks less noticeable. Being an absolute beginner and too scared to bleach all over, I thought this highlighting kit might be a good way to dip my toes into hair lightening. I did a lot of research, watched Youtube tutorials to avoid frying it off , and decided on this kit to use for my first attempt. The first picture is my before color. I first did a strand test (second picture) and this is after about 40 minutes of processing time. I was pleased with the amount of lightening, so I decided to keep going. The photo doesn't really show it super well, but you can see my natural color under the tape, and the lightened color is a kind of light copper. The kit comes with a plastic cap with printed holes on it. You can either use every hole for an all-over look, or every other one for a more scattered look. I decided on every other. There is a little hook included that you use to pull strands out through the cap, so that the hair underneath doesn't get lightened. Well, this is where I ran into trouble. My hair is REALLY fine, and I just could not get ANY hair hooked on that darn thing. I tried for probably half an hour until my husband took pity and said he'd give it a shot. Somehow he was better at it (maybe the angle is easier to get if you're not looking in a mirror? Or he used more pressure? Not sure), so I let him help me pull strands through all the circles. I might need to use tweezers or something next time. You may not have this issue though, if your hair isn't insanely fine and slippery. I recommend using a comb to lightly brush against the cap after and make sure you don't have any tangles or loops that didn't quite make it through. I used a combination of my gloved fingers and a hair paintbrush (don't know what they're really called) to coat the strands with the mixed solution. It went on pretty easily. Then I set a timer and put the included plastic cover over the top. I checked it every 10 minutes, and when it looked like it had processed to where I liked it, rinsed it out. I also did the shampoo and conditioner included, which helped make my hair feel a lot softer. Overall, I really like how it turned out! My hair actually looks ginger just from this kit alone. It looks very natural; my sister who is a natural redhead looks like this in the summer. I'll still probably add the Overtone Copper Kit to help blend it into the exact shade I like though. I'll come back and post the results of that after I do it. If you are going for more true blonde strands, you'll probably need to leave it on longer (a few strands on my bangs processed to yellow) or possibly do a second bleaching. A toner might make it less orange leaning. But this definitely gives a nice lightening effect on brown, and for someone who wanted to go to the coppery side anyway, it's perfect!laci.m

I have very light gray coming in on my sides and wanted to cover it for a bit longer. My natural colour is dark ash blonde. So I chose Revlon 60. I left it on longer as per the instructions for covering gray which it supposedly does 100% and had good hair saturation. And 5 minutes prior to rinsing I combed the remainder through my hair. I'm experienced with box colouring. Result? Red and patchy gray coverage. It's a cheap colour so I shouldn't be surprised. I do not recommend. At all.Jo

I recently purchased 2 boxes of Revlon Colorsilk Honey Blonde #42 and I was disappointed by the products results for my daughter's 3b/c dark brown hair. The product doesnt lift the hair color enough to show and all around color difference on the hair. It was inexpensive and cheap on quality. 2 bottle of the shade wasn't enough. DARK AND LOVELY OR CREME OF NATURE OR FADE RESISTANT BY D/R is far a SUPERIOR product and in my opinion, better quality for African American Hair where you outstanding results and are not cheated out of your money, time, self- esteem. I used #48 Burgundy on my naturally brown, greying hair. I don't use colour protecting shampoo or conditioner because they need to be used daily on my oily hair. I use deep cleansing shampoo 2-3 times weekly to keep the oiliness at bay, but it washed away the colour. I had greys peeking through after two weeks. If you're accustomed to colouring your hair at home, you'll find this kit is similar to most brands. All you need is in the box & the multi-language instructions are easy to follow. The colour crème is runnier than most other brands: it's like a dark amber liquid. When added to the developer, the mixture was runnier than most other brands too, so be careful of drips when applying. I popped a shower cap on while the colour developed. The recommended development time is 25 minutes or 30 minutes for resistant greys. For root-only applications, leave to develop for 20 minutes or 25 minutes for resistant greys. I used the maximum development time. The conditioner sachet wouldn't tear open. It needed to be snipped, so I advise you to do this before getting in the shower. The conditioner smelt divine, but there wasn't quite enough for a single use. My hair felt awful after colouring, but by the second shampoo using my regular conditioner, it felt fine. REPURCHASE? No. RECOMMEND? No – unless you just want to try something cheaply & don't have greys to cover. Made in USA. This is my favorite coloring product. It doesnt smell like strong chemicals when you use it. And if youre just coloring again to refresh your hair then you dont even need a whole bottle. Its inexpensive and it smells good, and it works. Black brown is now my go-to after I used the jet black one for a couple of years. This is an excellent choice for brunettes. My grays were coming in on week three and I wanted some way to control them without going to the salon. This is easy to use. Because it is not the same type of salon color ingredients I was very conservative on how long I left it on my hair and it came out really nice. Since you mix it with water, you can easily touch up some gray areas around your face if needed in between. Just mix a little of the powder from the bottle and save the rest. I have medium brown hair. Light chestnut has a nice warm look.Joy

This started working well for me but after a few times this seemed to not last. If you want a quick fix this is the product for you. Very easy to use. Used bottle as well it was worse. Disappointed with this product.kesha.r
