20 Best Nail Hole Filler (2024 Update)

This is not good spackle-type compound. It is way too dry per what comes out of the tip…then it dries up and is impossible to get any more out of the tube in the proper way. When I cut into the tube, the stuff that came out was runny, watery, and bad. I threw out this awful stuff after only a couple uses, both of which were very difficult to manage via squeezing the tube. I definitely do NOT recommend this product.nvr2amzd

I moved into a home that I made a deal to fix up with no deposit. There were nail holes everywhere because the last tenants couldn't find the wall stubs. My girlfriend bought me this Nail hole patch, I couldn't get it out through the sponge, I just took it off and applied straight from the tube now my walls look brand new after this and painting over old wall colors. This spackle will not squeeze out at all!!! First of all the foil would not come off so got plyers and still could not peel off so just poked a hole through foil. Then the spackle was way too thick to come out the hole. Yes I kneeded it before hand and tube seems soft enough but seems like the top (where the foil cover is) is maybe dried up, like too hard to squeeze out. I would NOT recommend this product to anyone( not even my enemies) I will by DAP next time. I only put one star cause it was required but I actually I rate it a 0 star.David

There was not anything I did not like about this product. It covered nicely without being chalky or thick. It was quite effective in covering ridges in my nail. It stayed on for a good amount of time and I could give my nails multiple coats without becoming gummy or sticky. The price point was a little higher but the product was worth the extra bucks.jaye.r

A little pricey but honestly so good. As soon as I dipped the brush I knew it was going to be good. It went on so smooth and so perfectly neat. I have the most unbelievably weak nails and am so vitamin deficient that my nails never grow well. I have managed to get them all a similar length so wanted something to keep them a little protected until I am confident enough to go to a salon for a proper manicure. I looked at a couple of options and went for the OPI because it has a solid reputation. So glad I didn't cheap out. It's a great buy.rose.s

Base coat and top coat are very particular things. There definitely seems to be chemistry involved, that is, your chemistry and how it works with the product. Just as some colours will look good on you and others won't, base coats can be really tricky. This ridge filler (let's face it, it's also a base coat) and I don't have great chemistry. It's kind of okay, but it's mostly just meh. It doesn't seem to help the ridges especially (my ridges are not terribly pronounced), and it tends to be quite sticky, even after it supposedly dries. I also find that it makes the polish take longer to dry, even when using quick-dry drops or quick-dry top coat. I'm sure this works great for some people, but for me, not so much, sadly. It's excellent door quick fixes and essentially on the go for traveling purposes. I think it works well for at-home use, too for non-professionals, and it holds up to what it’s meant to do. I only used it for when it was me crafty. Otherwise, I just used the regular builder powders or gel builder.fredrica.a

So simple to use!!! Very small fits in your bag for quick fixes just add glue and your done. I have found this in many store so its easy to find and it has the perfect amount to last quite awhile. It is easy and durable, works on natural or artificial nails.crystal.m

I needed something to patch a hole left by a doorknob being pushed into sheetrock so I went searching and found this 3M repair product. I wasn't sure about the consistency or how it would dry but I was pleasantly surprised with the results. It's almost clay like but looser than that and it went over the hole smoothly. It covers up to 5 inches and luckily I didn't need to use it all. I already sanded out the rough parts and painted over the spot (and added a doorstop) and it's nearly inconceivable to the naked eye. I'm glad this product exists and will seek it out for future projects.Lena87

I have used a variety of patching materials over the years, but almost exclusively chose the bottle type of containers, thinking that was the best option around. After using the 3M Large Hold Repair, I don't think I will ever go back to any other type of patching brand/container. Patching four holes took less than a minute and produced perfect results. The product says it is mainly for larger patches, but I can definitely say it works great on small ones too. Although you can use your finger easily, having a flat edged patching tool does make the install much easier and more consistent. All around a great product.amy348

There were some bathroom accessories installed in my bathroom- towel racks, towel holder and toilet paper holder- that I did not want anymore. When I went to take them out they left large holes in the wall from where they were screwed in. These were definitely bigger than just paint over holes! I was thankful to have 3M high strength large hole repair fiber reinforced sparkling compound on hand! The compound is not overly sticky or thick and easily filled the holes. It also dried quickly and cleanly and I am excited to get those spots painted over and it will look like new! The container holds a lot of compound and I am excited to have this one hand for future diy repairs.HeatherL

I love how there are so many different color options available. The container is a screw cap so it is resealable and you only use what you need and can save the rest for another day. The putty applies very easily with your finger and the surrounding area can be wiped clean with a damp cloth. The putty is smooth and easy to roll into a ball to put into a nail hole without making a mess and getting stuck to fingers. It works exactly as it should and the hole is filled and stays filled even after wiping away excess putty. The color of the putty is matched to Minwax stains so it makes picking out the right putty so easy. It really makes finished wood projects look great!Slothy

This wood putty is such a great product, especially for our house that is entirely wood floors with 2 small children running around all day. We often find dings or minor dents in the floor that need to be repaired, and this product makes that really simple. It is color matched to Miniwax wood floor stains, so we picked up some Mahogany wood putty and got to work. You simply put the in the hole, wipe away the excess putty and you’re all done. It’s amazing how well it works, the wood floors look good as new. Highly recommend having this product on hand if you have wood flooring!CaseyColbert

This stuff is great whether you use it for woodwork, furniture, crafts, etc. I love that they make different shades to match the Minwax stains and you can mix them for a customized color. There’s little to no prep involved, just stain and topcoat your project before applying and make sure it’s clean and dry. Press the putty to the surface and spread it, wipe excess away with a damp cloth. I use a small craft spatula to apply but you could use a scraper, spreader, spatula or anything else to apply it. Great for filling in holes or nails, fixing scratches, etc. I didn’t notice a smell when using it and my daughter has asthma and is super sensitive to smells and she never mentioned it. I love using this for small areas, it works just like mud, without the mixing and guessing. I always suggest waiting 30 more minutes after the entire area turns white before you lightly sand, because it’s still damp and will transfer to your sanding block. It’s perfect for small to medium size jobs. It’s only roughly $10 at Home Depot, for 32oz can. Don’t be fooled by the small can with the spatula included, that’s where they get you. Buy the large can like I purchased, and buy a 3 inch putting flex knife.crystal.s

This handy tube makes it easy to fill nail holes, cracks or imperfections on projects whether new or a repair. It goes on easily, has minimal shrinking and can be smoothed easily with a damp cloth or paper towel. This avoids a lot of hassle and mess with sanding. It dries pretty fast depending on depth and is easy to clean up. I almost always paint or stain and color match and adhesion is great. The twist on cap is easy to clean off, is air tight, and extends product life. No issues with dried up compound after initial use.Jrmmb

My floor installer left scratches, dents and nail holes in the woodwork. To repair these, I tried Minwax Color-Matched Wood Filler. The first store I went to, didn’t have the color I needed so I bought two tubes and tried to mix them. I was not successful. The stain I have on my woodwork is Honey Oak. I found Golden Oak at another store. It is real easy to put on. No sanding is needed, just a damp cloth after it sits for a few minutes. Because I have an old stain, it didn’t match very well. It looked ok on small nail holes, but the difference really showed up on dents and scratches. Because I like the ease of this product, I will get the stainable wood filler for the remaining repairs. It will add a step but will match better with my existing wood.Riley

There's quite a few different colors to choose from, which is great because then you can watch your wood easier. I used this Minwax Color Matched Wood Filler to fix some knicks and pin nail holes on my rocking chair. It's old and had to be repaired in a few places. The great thing is if it doesn't match perfectly, you can sand and paint it. Glad to have this is my work shop for small to medium sized projects.TLCJ

I am a big Minwax fan but am very disappointed in Minwax's Stainable Wood Filler. I've just used it for the first time to fill tiny open joints in a new oak tabletop. While working the product into the seams with a putty knife, the process made grinding sound as the putty knife worked it down, suggesting that the filler formula includes fine sand. After a bit of effort with the putty knife, the putty began to turn gray, suggesting that the sand, if it is there, was grinding metal dust off of the putty knife. The end result, until I realized what was happening, is gray stripes at the seams rather than stripes matching the wood color. The gray color is much more noticeable after the filler dries. Perhaps I worked the putty too much, but I didn't want a thin layer at the top of the seams to avoid later pop-outs. If my guess on source of the problem is correct, a warning on the product label would help others avoid my issue, perhaps suggesting not to overwork the filler (explaining why) and suggesting the use of plastic putty knife blades. And speaking of labels, the label on my 16 oz. tub looks to be copied directly from the smaller tubes in which the filler is sold, as it instructs the user to "squeeze a liberal amount … into the area to be filled." Squeezing the plastic tub won't accomplish the desired result. In the attached photo, the left side shows the filler on a scrap of oak as it comes from the tub and the right side shows the filler after about 15 seconds of troweling with a steel-bladed putty knife (a Rockler brand tool.)Tommmm

I have used Minwax products for many years and have always been satisfied with the excellent quality of their products. Minwax stainable wood filler is no exception. The filler is easy to apply with a putty knife, easy to sand to a smooth finish and the wood filler takes the Minwax penetrating stains very well. The only issue is getting the correct stain to match whatever wood your using. Sometimes I need to mix a few stains to get the best color match but Minwax products always work well. I am new to DIY so I look for products that has good review, reasonably priced and most specifically delivers. Minwax stainless wood filter fits in. I was trying to make a frame for a canvas I got online but since I am inexperienced, I made a lot of mistake in hammering my nails on the wood frame. It looked funny, if I were to do it again I but I do not have the resources. Then I remember about the minwax I have kept in the garage so I used it. I was concern because I have never used it before and it seemed like a grainy paste that might looked like too watery. I do not understand the process but after patching the gaps and holes I made as a mistake, I let it sat for an hours or so, came back and when it was dry I was happy to see that it's as if there was nothing in there except that it's obvious there were small circles from the hole. This product worked great to repair approximately a 4" hole in our drywall. It came with everything we needed to cover the hole. We made sure the area to fix was as clean and as neat long the edges and surrounding area as possible before starting. This project was surprisingly quick and easy. The back plate was easy to place. We overcompensated some with the compound spackling to fill and then sanded it down to even it out, which I think worked better than using less. We also let it stand for 48 hours to make sure it was completely solid before sanding. I liked that this kit came with everything needed to do the wall repair project so we didn't end up going back and forth to the hardware store multiple times to actually finish it as we do with almost every other project we start! I received the 3M™ Large Hole Wall Repair Kit in exchange for my honest review. We recently removed a built-in nook seating area in our kitchen and removal left some large holes in the drywall. We used the 3M™ Large Hole Wall Repair Kit to fix one of the biggest holes and it looks lots better than the patching we've done in the past with other products. It seems important to follow the instructions carefully and it was a simple, quick process. We waited several weeks after patching to paint (because I couldn't decide on my colors!) and once painted, you'd never know there was a patch there. Good product, not too messy.jkblueeyez

I was given this product by 3M in exchange for an honest review and it is not quite what I expected for the large hole repair kit for an average home Do It Yourself-er. I am a 44 year old female who was given my first drill kit as a high school graduation present from my father, who believed that both boys and girls should know more than the basics in home maintenance. In my life I have built bookcases, drywalled rooms, installed toilets, etc. I feel very comfortable around tools and fixing projects around my home. This kit is for 6-12 inch or larger hole, which is NOT what I consider to be the average large hole for a homeowner. The average large hole is about 3" and made by pulling a nail off the wall too hard, or finding that there was only a board (drywall) behind something you were trying to hang up. This kit is for when your children are wrestling and one of them accidentally puts their head through the wall, in which case you have much bigger problems than the wall. The kit actually tells you that in order for you to put its plastic backing inside the wall, you need to be sure you have a BIG enough hole and I'm not sure I want to make my hole even bigger just to put plastic in there. The brown plastic sticks up against the wall you're trying to fix with tape that comes off (but be careful not to stick it to itself- this is where the 3M video comes in handy go.3M.com/LHWallRepairKit ). Once the plastic is in place you use the enclosed wall repair (aka spackle) to fix the hole. *Again, I did not feel comfortable making the hole in my home bigger to try this product out. I felt that this product was for professional contractors or more skilled people than myself willing to open up their walls, which I would not do. I feel that 3M should be marketing this to more professionals than DIY, since it clearly states that opening up your wall to put the plastic backing in is required and if you are not capable of doing this safely, you may do more damage to your wall!!*graceie

This product is extremely convenient and amazing. Having the drywall spackle, primer, putty knife, and sanding pad all in one device makes the whole process of repairing a wall so easy. I had a small dent in a wall caused by moving furniture down stairs and this product worked well to fix the wall. It came out of the bottle easily ad the putty knife worked well to smooth it out. The sander then finished it off with a smooth finish. Overall, I am really happy with this product!lilstegs

I was skeptical at first. But this is a very convenient hole repair tool to have. Most of our holes are from anchors. Which can leave a pretty big hole. I placed the product right up against the hole and squeezed it in. Scraped off the excess and let it dry before sanding. I also used the scraper side to attempt to even out the dry wall prior to filling the hole. The sand paper is a bit rough, which can affect the surrounding surface. It would be nice if they maybe made a higher grit side and allowed it to be flipped around. Other than that, this tool is very convenient. The consistency of the plaster is thick enough to stay in place, but soft enough to scrape and rub off any extra.Jess G

The 3M High Strength Small Hole Repair is absolutely perfect! I'm not the best at lining up when hanging pictures & this makes is so simple to repair errant holes. Simply apply a small amount of the solution, use the tube to push it into the hole & smooth it out, and then sand when dry. The cap includes a sanding pad.
