What you WILL get are the equally loved qualities of Speyside – some would say here you will find THE definitive Speyside flavours. This Malt is lighter and golden both in the aromas and mouth but also in its mood. It has fruitiness, sweetness and vanilla and is exceptionally smooooth. I personally wouldn't insult such craftsmanship by adding any more than a small drop of water (which will give you the best flavour experience) or alternatively neat over ice. This is so smooth that it absolutely does not need the ice but old habits die hard. Mix it if you must but that is really missing the whole pointRickD

Lagavulin 16 has a smoky wood smell to the drinker, however the smell turns into a bittersweet caramel dark chocolaty/toffee taste in the nose. a hint of vanilla comes to play due to the vanilla extract that was cooked with the scotch to keep the smoky consistency. the taste of this scotch whisky is very smooth and cool. it has a little oiliness to it. the taste is more lively of wood burning. the sweetness of the flavors grasp within themselves and deliver a bittersweet taste which people don't see in many whiskies on the rocks its only smells and tastes like wood smoke. the finish is ever so pleasing with no burn, fades of sweetness and flavors that keep making you lick your lips over and over again.

I normally drink single malts – The Glenlivet, Glenfiddich, or The Macallan. I tried this based on the reviews, and because I was looking for an every day kind of scotch. I was pleasantly surprised! This stuff is awesome, to put it crudely. Full of flavor, yet extremely mild and smooth. Hints of vanilla and brown sugar make the 43% alcohol content almost unnoticeable. I read an article saying how great it was. I figured I would try it. For the price, it’s a lot cheaper than most 18 year old scotches. I was pleasantly surprised at how smooth it was. It has since become my favorite scotch. I am so glad I found this early on in life so I can enjoy it for years to come. I always recommend it to anyone and everyone who enjoys scotch. One of the best blends I have tried! Lots of notes I associate with very old single malts in this one. Quite surprising! Apples, peaches and leather on the nose. Palate is lovely – pecans, dark chocolate, honey and some wonderful barrel funk. Short, spicy finish with an ashey note that lingers a bit longer. Will definitely get this again. Curious as to how long this actually sits in the rum barrel or any barrel. I would assume at least 10 years as smooth as it is. Smells of banana, fruit candies, the beach, and rum, but still familiar vanillas and honeys of other single malts. Completely opposite of the Balvenie Caribbean cask however. That malt is a classic Balvenie with some lesser rum characteristics (still one of my favorites). This malt is much more playful, fruity, sweet, and I taste the Rum barrels on the finish. This is Talisker 10 with a finish in Amorosso (not Olorosso) sherry casks. Turn down the normal Talisker peat and smoke just a hair, and add subtle sherry sweetness, on both the nose and palate. I do get dark chocolate on the finish. Extremely well balanced. Perfect for someone who likes lighter peated scotches than an Ardbeg or Laphroaig. I was I had something more original to add, but sometimes it's just as effective to confirm it is as advertised.Michael V

Surprisingly light and delightful The aroma starts with peat and light tang of salty ocean water, an intriguing combination. The initial smokiness, on sipping, disappears almost completely and is replaced by vanilla pound cake, perhaps with tiny dollop of lemon curd. It glides easily over the tongue and palate, leaving a warm sensation on the back of the throat , and finishes with a mellow reprisal of the vanilla, with just a touch of cinnamon. At 40% abv this is very thin. I LOVE the 12 year old, in fact it’s one of my favorite whiskys but this is not even close to it in terms of quality or flavor. It also has somthing very strange going on in the finnish almost like a BBQ sauce note. It is also very dry on the pallet compared to the 12 year old which is so much richer and sweeter. I'm not usually a whisky drinker so I'm not sure if I'm the best person to recommend this product. But if you usually avoid whisky because you find it harsh and burns the throat, then this one is a bit of a revelation. Maybe it wouldn't be complex enough for some serious whisky lovers, but for me it is very smooth and palatable. It's the first whisky I've tried that I've wanted to drink more of. My hubby is more of a whisky drinker than I am and he also commented on how smoothly it went down. Nice quality whisky. Definitely worth taking a chance on if you haven't bought it before (and also a nice looking bottle if you're searching for a whisky gift for someone).Genie

I have to say, I'm not much of a drinker… But this is amazing. It's literally what you'd imagine fire to taste like! Amazingly Smokey. The smoke itself has a slight sweetness to it. And it burns a little going down. It's definitely during stuff and best for tiny sips. But if you like a smokey, peaty flavor you should definitely try it!susan.h

What's not to love about this port barrel finished Scotch? It's a wonderfully smooth, even a little sweet, sipping whisky that I prefer to drink straight in a glencairn. It needs nothing more than that. It was bought for a special occasion and will be only be used for special occasions. Balvenie 21 Portwood is excellent if you can afford it, worthy of a place in any collection. The Portwood adds a rich flavor with plenty of complexity and is almost creamy. The greatest thing about Scotch is the experience and like all experiences, it’s different for everyone. I like to think of myself as more of a Scotch explorer than a connoisseur. One of the things I like most about Scotch is the variety and variations from one to the other. This includes year over year as Scotch varies from one year to the next. Over time, my preference of one to another changes. As an example, my favorite daily drinker for years was the Lagavulin 16, a fine smoky Scotch with plenty of complexity, a worthy spot in anyone’s collection. Most recently the Balvenie 12 Doublewood has claimed my daily drinker spot although the Walker 15 sneaks in every now and again. The Macallan 18 which for some reason (maybe it’s because I do not drink it that often), always makes my top spot. It’s just a really good Scotch. I mix it up as to how I take it depending on what experience I want to have. Neat is great for those times when you want the deep notes from the woods and are looking for the real deal. I usually take it on the rocks so that the flavors smooth out a bit and I can get more complexity from the Scotch. The only time I put a splash in is if the alcohol content is high to take the bite off.
